5 Ways to Prevent Sinusitis Symptoms

It’s important to take several precautions and prevent sinusitis before it affects your quality of life.

Sinusitis is a fairly common disorder, and its symptoms can affect your quality of life. Dealing with facial pain, nasal discharge and congestion is bothersome and exhausting. If you are a busy person, then you do not have time to get sick. That’s why it is important to take precautions and do everything you can to prevent sinusitis symptoms before they arise.

Stay Healthy, Prevent Sinusitis

  1. Vaccinations – In our “The Difference Between Sinusitis and the Common Cold” article, we have discussed how a cold or flu can lead to sinusitis. We recommend that you receive yearly flu vaccinations. This reduces your chances of contracting the flu and any other pesky illnesses.
  2. Stay Away From Other Sick People – If someone you know is sick with a cold or flu, then it is best to keep your distance from them until they get better. The flu is contagious. According to the CDC, “Most healthy adults may be able to infect other people beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick. Children may pass the virus for longer than 7 days.”
  3. Keep Clean – Believe it or not, our hands become very dirty during our daily routines. When we touch objects in public or people who are sick, germs can get on our hands. The worst part is that we frequently touch our eyes, nose, mouth without even realizing it. Germs can get into our body this way, and make us sick. The best way to combat this is to wash your hands regularly.
  4. Avoid Smoking and Smokers – Smoking is detrimental to your health. As toxic fumes from cigarettes enter your body, they can cause you to experience sinusitis symptoms. It is an irritant that can result in inflamed sinuses. You can prevent sinusitis by dropping this nasty habit and staying away from others who smoke.
  5. Humid Environments – Your sinusitis symptoms can be a result of dry air. Dry nasal passages prevent infectious materials from passing through your nose. Drinking plenty of fluids can help keep your nasal passages moist. If you are still having issues, then inhaling steam or using a dehumidifier can help you prevent sinusitis.
