There isn’t much you can do once you have been struck with a cold or sinusitis. However, that doesn’t mean you should give up. You or your child shouldn’t suffer during the whole ordeal. If any of you have sinusitis, then it’s time to find symptom relief until the condition goes away or you see a doctor.
Seek Symptom Relief Right Away
Once you start to display the signs of sinusitis, do not hesitate to take care of the situation. There is no point in letting your condition make your life unbearable. Look out for headaches, congestion, sinus pain, postnasal drip, sore throat, cough, and fever. If any of these occur, visit your closest pharmacy for medication.
Using Medications
Over-the-counter medications are not the cure for your condition. However, they do make dealing with sinusitis bearable. Some drugs like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen do well to reduce fever and swelling of the nasal passages.
For kids under the age of 6 months, the CDC recommends using the only acetaminophen for sinus pain. And for older children, both acetaminophen and ibuprofen can be used.
Home Remedies
Sometimes, basic care can provide relief and keep you going throughout the day. Here are some things you can do at home to feel better:
- Place a warm towel over the top of your face and nose. This will relieve sinus pressure.
- The use of a decongestant or saline nasal spray will reduce inflammation in the sinuses. It’s temporary, but it will get you breathing for a while.
- Breathing in steam or taking a hot shower also relieves some congestion.
When to See an Otolaryngologist
Once again, these forms of symptom relief are temporary. They help you deal with sinusitis until you are healthy again. However, if your symptoms do not go away after a couple of weeks, then seek an otolaryngologist. They will give you options for effective relief, like balloon sinuplasty.
